RON MUECK AND FRIENDS

I recently made a huge boo boo y'all. I accidentally, seriously can't figure out how, deleted all pictures in my camera. I had amounted about 4,000 pictures in the past year and a half or so, many of those were from the past few months. That being said, I was only able to salvage about 20 from my phone camera which is what I'll be posting this week until I get new and better material any how. I'm not going to lie. It's a fucking bummer. I still want to cry. BUT, first world problems right?! So moving on!

Some friends and I visited the ever so weird exhibition of Ron Mueck's work at the MFAH. I'm open to a lot of things but this one was seriously odd. After seeing and letting it all sink in, I still have no idea how I feel about it. Everything was WAAAAYYY too real. Worth the time though if you want to throw in a curve ball at your usual impressionistic taste ;)

TEXAS CONTEMPORARY

We're going to have to back track a few weeks for this one...

It was one of those awful weeks, you know, the ones where you question everything you're doing and how and why. The kind where by Tuesday you want to cry because it's not Friday night yet. We've all had one.

So when I got the message for free VIP tickets to the Texas Contemporary art show in town, I just about died. We had galleries visiting from all over, not just from the states.

As always, a best girlfriend in tow, Mel was my date for the weekend. I spent hours admiring all pieces. Those from the Nil Gallery

Took a short break to grab a gin and tonic and regroup before going back for round two the last day.

Now mind you, these are only a handful of shots from the thousands of pieces that were shown that weekend. But for my first time, the show did not disappoint.

Talk soon and until next year Texas Contemporary!

CROISSANTS, CABERNET BLANC, et LE PETIT PRINCE

That's about all the French I speak. Basics guys, basics!

This past weekend did carry a bit of a french theme though. Netflix recently released Le Petit Prince and Mel and I had been itching to have movie night to watch this. I'm also trying to make a bit more of an effort to be a good host, so I warmed up a few croissants, set out the Nutella, and my guest brought the liquid grapes. Have you seen the movie yet????

I ugly cried.

I'm not ashamed.

And if you have a heart, you'll bawl too!

Now, I don't actually know what the French eat and drink and my apologies if our movie treats are offensive to your culinary arts, but we thoroughly enjoyed it and that's what ultimately counts right?

I loved the movie so much that I've been listening to the soundtrack nonstop and I can't stop thinking about this quote in particular.
“You - you alone will have the stars as no one else has them...In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night...You - only you - will have stars that can laugh.”

Saturday was spent at one of my usual spots, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. I felt the need to visit while it was gloomy out and see Kusama's exhibit yet again. The clouds made the inside feel a little gothic with the shadows the statues were casting. I had a relaxed lunch with my mom and a nice walk in the museum district.

But in true Houston nature, the sun came out midday for a few hours.

P.S. Anybody know who we can contact to clean that sign up there? I couldn't get over how pretty but dirty it was.

MOMMY AND ME DATE

Saturday was date day for my mom and me, mom and I? Whichever. It'd been a while since it was just us girls hanging out. So as any normal twenty-five year old, I chose to watch The Secret Life of Pets. I LOVED it! Also, kudos to the parents of the children that were in the same theatre as us. I'm not kidding, ALL of the kids were quiet and sat through the entire film and it was greatly appreciated. We stopped for a quick lunch at la Madeline before going to the Contemporary Arts Museum.

At the moment they have an exhibit by Mark Flood upstairs and a Jae Ko exhibit downstairs.

It was a great day. We didn't have any deep discussions or talk about our feelings. It was just us two enjoying our company and enjoying the art.

Can you believe that's all paper???

P.S. all pictures were taken with my phone in case they look a little grainy.

TWILIGHT EPIPHANY

I couldn't possibly tell you what I did for my nineteenth birthday, truth is, I don't remember. I do remember what I did for my brother's nineteenth though. I mean, it was yesterday. We had a nice dinner out, then a trip to James Turrell's Skyspace. The kid is simple y'all, which is one of my favorite things about him actually. I won't boost his ego and list all the things I admire about him but I will say that given I only have one brother, I do feel like the luckiest girl to have him as my one and only sibling.

SUNDATE WITH KUSAMA

We had a twist on a typical Sunday brunch and instead went to the opening of Yayoi Kusama's exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, At the End of the Universe. The line to even purchase a ticket was insane, the wait to get in the exhibition was another two hours but it was all expected for opening day and so worth it. I walked around and visited some of my favorites while I waited.

I know I'll be visiting that exhibition over and over again. Guys, it is breathtakingly beautiful.

TICKET FOR ONE

So the other day I realized that the Mark Rothko exhibit was only here in the Museum of Fine Arts until the 24th which is already next Sunday. I took myself on a date early Saturday morning. By the time it opened I was there and ready and I got really flipping lucky because the place was practically empty y'all. I have to reiterate how incredibly pretty museums are when empty. It made me feel like the entire place was mine. Which leads me to the main topic.

How many of you feel uncomfortable going to places alone?

I've asked friends before, and a great majority of those I've asked have admitted that they would probably feel weird going to certain places alone. Now, I've always been a fan of going places on my own, lots of perks are involved. For example, when I go to the movies alone, I can comfortable cry or crack up without a partner making fun of me, I don't have to share snacks, and I'm not judged for said snacks. When I go out for lunch/dinner/breakfast alone, I don't worry about how I look when I'm eating, or what I ordered, or having to offer my partner a share of my meal. When I go to a bar, I don't feel the pressure to make small talk, I am not questioned about my lack of desire for umbrella decorated drinks, and I only have to worry about securing one seat. When I go to museums, I don't feel embarrassed if I cry when looking at a painting or sculpture, I don't feel rushed to step away from an art piece, and I don't feel judged when I decide to sit indian style and write down how I feel after enjoying the art piece. Point is, I decided to be kinder to myself this year and what is kinder than setting me up with the best date? By the way the best date is me in case you didn't catch that ;)

INTERSECTIONS

I'd been dying to see Intersections by Anila Quayyum Agha since it opened and it just so happened that the day I went, it was closed, leaving me with one other option...sneaking over during a lunch break. I wound up eating at my desk taking bites between typing but it was SO worth it! To be fair, I could have gone during the weekend but it would not have been empty like I wanted it to be. I sat for a good twenty minutes to take it all in. One single object, the cube in the center lit with one single light, engulfed the entire room with her beautiful designs. Sadly the installation is only at the Rice Gallery (click here for gallery info) until December 6 but if you can sneak by there this weekend, PLEASE do. I only ask one favor for your sake...when you walk in, observe it, take it in, and let it consume you, but mainly, enjoy it before taking out the camera ;)
